NSF Support for travel by US researchers
Deadline for
application: Sunday, April 6, 2003
A block travel grant proposal has been submitted to the National
Science Foundation for the XIV
International Congress on Mathematical Physics to be held at the
University of Lisbon, Portugal, July 28 - August 2, 2003. This grant
will provide support for travel to the Congress and possibly
associated satellite meetings by US based researchers. Priority will
be given to recent PhDs and advanced graduate students who do not
have travel support from other sources. Women and members of
under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
Application procedure
Deadline
Applications must be received by Saturday, February 15. We hope to
notify researchers who will receive funds by early March, so late
applications cannot be considered.
The Application must include
- A cover letter explaining the applicant's interest
in the congress, other possible funding sources, and what satellite
conferences or visits with other scientists are planned in conjunction
with the congress.
- Curriculum Vitae, including a list of publications.
- Brief (one page) description of the applicants research.
- In the case of a student or postdoctoral applicants, a letter
of recommendation from a senior scientist.
Submission of applications
The grant will be administered by Bruno Nachtergaele and the staff of the
Mathematics Department of
the University of California, Davis.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications by
email to icmp-travel@math.ucdavis.edu.
The preferred format for applications is a single PDF file, which
should be sent as an attachment to an e-mail message to the address
given above. Student and postdoctoral applicants should also request
the senior scientist writing on their behalf to submit the letter by
e-mail to the same address.
Applicants who cannot submit their
application by email may mail it to:

Selection criteria
- Scientific excellence
- An indication that the applicant's future research and professional
growth will benefit from participation in the conference and associated
satellite meetings.
- Preference will be given to recent PhD's and outstanding graduate
students.
- Researchers who have travel funds available from regular NSF
grants or other sources are not eligible.
Selection committee
Applications will be reviewed a Selection Committee consisting of the following members:
- Eric Carlen (Georgia Tech)
- Jennifer Chayes (Microsoft Research)
- Joseph Conlon (U Michigan)
- Bruce Driver (UC San Diego)
- Bruno Nachtergaele (UC Davis)
- Alexander Its (IUPUI)
- Mary Beth Ruskai (U Massachusetts, Lowell)
- Lawrence E. Thomas (U Virginia)
Amount of award
We anticipate being able to fund travel for approximately twenty
researchers. Awards will specify a maximum support amount which
should be sufficient to cover the cheapest airfare to Lisbon (US
carrier), modest room and board there, and the registration fee.
Participants whose expenses for the main conference (including the
Young Researchers Symposium) are less than the maximium amount will be
allowed to submit expenses for a satellite meeting up to an amount
that does not exceed the overall ceiling. Applications for funding the
satellite meetings only will not be considered.
